About Us

Not having any land of our own and living in a Lancashire town didn't stop us - we were always grade one wannabe farmers!! Holidays were spent bed and breakfasting on farms learning as much as possible and picking up tips to set us in good stead if we ever made it as farmers.

We learnt how to handle a sheep dog up in the Scottish hills at Achnacone Farm. Take a look at how we got on. The ins and outs of organic sheep farming at Boreland Organic Sheep Farm near Dumfries.

We have always had a healthy interest in eating fresh local produce - bypassing the Supermarkets, preferring to shop at farmer's markets and local fruit & veg establishments but producing our own was the pipe dream. Even though we both worked full-time and had no land our 'farming' friends have been very supportive seeing us through Christmas Turkey rearing and a small duck production - both of which were successful beyond belief despite the sleepless nights.

What do we mean by Free Range?

Free range at Tawd Moss Farm - for chickens this means that the birds are free to roam from 6 weeks old outside on our grassy fields in small colonies. (This is actually the age that 'standard' supermarket birds are prepared for the oven!!) They are housed at night in roomy, home made shelters for safe keeping from Mr Fox and other predators.

It's all about choice for our chickens
and they just love their long outdoor life.

They are fed on specially blended food that is produced locally, this keeps down the food miles - something that is very important to us. They are fed naturally and do not have antibiotics at any stage of their lives. Finally the chickens are despatched and prepared for the table locally - ready for you to enjoy.

We have since successfully reared many Large Blacks, Middle Whites and Gloucester Old Spots. We are thrilled to see all of the pigs naturally thriving in the outdoor, additive free environment - they just love the freedom and like to help out with any fencing or arc building that we do!!

We have continued to develop this land into our Free Range Pig Unit, concentrating on British minority breeds as well as recently diversifying into free range poultry production.

We are still a very small outfit (just hubbie and me) and we both juggle parenting and work with tending our stock and attending the local farmer's market at Cedar Farm. We are both delighted with the progress we have made so far and would really like to develop our pig farm further - producing such quality pork is so rewarding.

We are enjoying a growing reputation for high quality produce and have been featured in Cumbria Life magazine. In 2007 we expanded our range to include Free Range Poultry. There seems to be a growing demand for our pork and interest/support in our free range methods. We are determined to source local feed and use the local family run abattoir for our pork to ensure quality and traceability.

If you would like more information about the pork that we rear, our stock for sale and our values please browse the website or contact us directly – we'd love to hear from you.
